Kyoto was Japan’s capital for over a millennium, and it shows: seventeen UNESCO World Heritage sites, some two thousand temples and shrines, and neighbourhoods where the machiya townhouses still glow with lantern light.
What to see
The golden pavilion of Kinkaku-ji and the vermillion gate tunnels of Fushimi Inari are the icons — go at opening time. Balance them with the quiet: a dawn walk on the Philosopher’s Path, a tea ceremony in a private machiya, dusk in Gion when the geiko hurry to appointments.
When to go
November is the maple season and arguably Kyoto’s finest hour. Spring brings blossoms and crowds in equal measure; June’s rains turn the moss gardens luminous.
